History of Carawans Motel

Carawans Motel was founded in 1949,  by Charlie and Elsie Gray Carawan.  Hyde County being the  Goose Capital  of the world at that time, they saw the need for a motel, store and restaurant.

Through the years, the guests that stayed with them and us have become family.  Charlie enjoyed people,  hunting and fishing-- which he did as often as possible.  Elsie enjoyed her family, guests and flower gardening.

In the hay day of hunting,  Elsie's home- cooked meals and oyster fritters is what the Carawans became known for.

At their retirement, Charlie's and Elsie's youngest son,
Mark, took over the business and kept it going.

Having grown up with his father and sportsmen all around, Mark has a unique understanding for the enjoyment of hunting and fishing, as well as bird watching.

In 2000, Mark and his wife, Lisa, closed the store and turned it into their first lodge, now know as the Southern Comfort Lodge.

At this time, Mark and Lisa- Lacey (left) Cricket (bottom) run the motel, bait and tackle shop.

Our motel offers top notch service to make your trip a memorable and successful one.

We are confident that once you compare us to other motels you will find Carawans to be second to none.

It is our greatest desire to make your stay with us like home.  Look forward to seeing you soon.
